From Classroom to Community: IKS UIN Sunan Kalijaga Launches Social Work Practicum

The Department of Social Welfare Studies (IKS) at the Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, convened a coordination meeting on Friday, October 3, 2025, to finalize plans for its Generalist Social Work Practicum. The session, held at the faculty’s meeting hall at 1 p.m., brought together faculty supervisors and representatives from partner institutions.

Opening the event, Muhammad Izzul Haq, Ph.D., Head of the IKS program, announced that in the current fall semester (2025–2026), the department is placing 100 students across 17 partner organizations. He expressed gratitude for the institutions’ continued support, underscoring the significance of practicum placements in preparing undergraduates for future professional certification. “This practicum is vital in helping students sharpen their capacity and readiness for the competency examinations ahead,” he noted.

The Dean of the Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication, Prof. Dr. Arif Maftuhin, M.Ag., M.A.I.S., followed with remarks stressing the importance of bridging academic theory with real-world practice. He highlighted that synergy between classroom learning and fieldwork remains essential to cultivating professional social workers.

The session continued with presentations by Khotibul Umam, M.Si., and Abidah Muflihati, M.Si., who outlined the practicum’s structure, timeline, and supervision mechanisms. They detailed the respective roles of students, academic mentors, and partner institutions in ensuring effective field placements.

The coordination meeting concluded at 3 p.m. after an interactive discussion with participants. Organizers expressed hope that the practicum will not only proceed smoothly but also provide students with invaluable hands-on experience to strengthen their professional skills in the field of social welfare.
