IKS Student Takes the Global Stage: Nabil Rifqi Nidhomi Becomes Indonesia’s Sole Presenter at GASI 2026

A student from the Social Welfare Study Program (IKS) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta has earned international recognition. Nabil Rifqi Nidhomi, a member of the 2023 cohort, emerged as the only presenter from Indonesia at the Global Awareness Society International (GASI) Student Incubator Conference, held on April 25, 2026.

The GASI Student Incubator Conference is a global academic forum that brings together undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from across North America, Asia, and Europe. Designed as a collaborative space, the conference invites participants to engage critically and across disciplines with pressing global issues.

At the forum, Nabil presented a paper titled “The Role of Social Capital in the Sustainability of Islamic Philanthropy: A Study of the Lumbung Pangan Jumat Berkah Mendut Community in Supporting Zero Hunger.”

The study addresses food security as part of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically the goal of Zero Hunger. Nabil explores how Islamic philanthropic practices—through zakat, infaq, and sadaqah—can serve as community-based solutions to poverty and hunger.

Using a qualitative case study approach, the research focuses on the Lumbung Pangan Jumat Berkah Mendut community in Magelang Regency. The findings suggest that the sustainability of philanthropic initiatives depends not only on material resources but also on the strength of social capital—trust, social networks, and shared norms within the community.

Notably, the study also highlights the role of women’s leadership in mobilizing community-based philanthropic initiatives, contributing to efforts to strengthen local food security.

Nabil’s participation at GASI 2026 underscores the ability of IKS students to compete on the global stage while offering scholarly perspectives grounded in real-world social challenges. The achievement further affirms the program’s role as a platform for cultivating academic excellence, research capacity, and global engagement.

Participation in international forums such as GASI not only expands academic networks but also serves as a strategic avenue for bringing locally rooted, value-driven practices—particularly those informed by Islamic principles—into global conversations on social justice and human well-being.
