IKS UIN Sunan Kalijaga Concludes Ramadan Pesantren Kilat at Yogyakarta Narcotics Prison

The Social Welfare Study Program (IKS) of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Class IIA Narcotics Prison of Yogyakarta, concluded the Ramadan Pesantren Kilat 1447 H program attended by around 50 inmates. The closing ceremony took place at At-Taubah Mosque within the Yogyakarta Narcotics Prison complex on Friday (13/3/2026) from 09.00 to 11.00 WIB.
This activity was part of a collaboration between a university and a correctional institution to provide spiritual guidance during the month of Ramadan. In total, 25 students from the IKS Study Program, along with CSSMORA students from UIN Jogja, were involved in organizing the pesantren kilat under the theme “Ramadan Mengabdi” (Serving in Ramadan).

The closing event began with an opening session followed by testimonies from student instructors who had participated in the pesantren kilat. The students shared that their experience of teaching and interacting with the inmates provided valuable lessons about empathy, humanity, and the importance of education and spiritual guidance in the process of personal transformation.

One inmate who participated in the program also expressed a deep impression of the activity. He stated that the pesantren kilat program had helped him reconnect with and practice religious values that had previously been neglected in his life. He also expressed hope that similar programs could continue in the future because they provide tangible benefits for inmates.

The Head of the Class IIA Narcotics Prison of Yogyakarta, Gumilar Budirahayu, in his remarks expressed appreciation to UIN Sunan Kalijaga and the students who contributed to the religious guidance activities for inmates.

“This pesantren kilat activity is an important part of the rehabilitation process in the prison, particularly in strengthening the spiritual and religious values of inmates,” he said.

Remarks on behalf of the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta were delivered by the Head of the Social Welfare Study Program, Muhammad Izzul Haq, representing the university leadership.

In his speech, he emphasized that collaboration between universities and correctional institutions represents a practical manifestation of the Islamic value ta’āwun ‘alā al-birri wa al-taqwā, which means helping one another in goodness and piety.

He also related the pesantren kilat program to the meaning of fasting in the Qur’an, which aims to cultivate piety, as mentioned in the verse la‘allakum tattaqūn (“so that you may become righteous”).

“The process of becoming more pious does not always happen individually. It also requires togetherness, support, and collaboration among various parties. This pesantren kilat program shows that spiritual development can be strengthened through cooperation between correctional institutions, universities, students, and inmates,” he explained.

The closing remarks were delivered by a representative of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, namely the Head of the Service and Development Division, Ganang, who expressed appreciation for the implementation of the pesantren kilat program as part of religious guidance efforts for inmates.

The event concluded with a symbolic exchange of souvenirs between the prison authorities and UIN Sunan Kalijaga, followed by a group photo with all participants.

Through this activity, it is hoped that collaboration between universities and correctional institutions will continue to grow in providing programs for guidance, education, and empowerment that support positive transformation among inmates.
