Learning Social Work from the Netherlands: IKS Students Conclude the Semester with an International Guest Lecture

The Social Welfare Study Program (IKS) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta concluded its English Language Course Class A for the 2025/2026 academic year's even semester with a Guest Lecture and Cross-Cultural Learning Session on Thursday, June 11, 2026.The event was held in collaboration with The Dreamhouse Indonesia Foundation, one of the Social Welfare Study Program's community partners, which currently serves as a host organization for international social work students undertaking internships and field placements in Yogyakarta. The event featured Kelany Marto, a Social Work student from the School of Social Studies – Social Work (Care Major) at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, the Netherlands. During the session, Kelany offered students a glimpse into social work education in the Netherlands, sharing insights from her academic training, field placements, and internship experiences. She also discussed contemporary social issues facing Dutch society and reflected on the evolving role and challenges of the social work profession within the Dutch welfare system.

The session was designed as a cross-cultural learning experience that combined English-language development with international exposure to the field of social work. As part of their final course assessment, students were asked to take academic notes during the presentation, write reflective essays in English, and actively engage in the discussion. The event encouraged students not only to strengthen their listening, writing, and critical-thinking skills, but also to broaden their understanding of how social work is taught and practiced in different parts of the world. By connecting local learning with global perspectives, the session offered students an opportunity to see their future profession through an international lens.
