IKS Program’s Participation in the Ramadan 1447 H Pesantren Kilat at the Yogyakarta Narcotics Correctional Facility

he Social Welfare Study Program (IKS) of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta participated in the Opening Ceremony of the Ramadan 1447 H Pesantren Kilat (Ramadan Intensive Islamic Program) held at Masjid Taubah, Yogyakarta Narcotics Correctional Facility, on Friday (13 February 2026) from 09.00 to 11.00 WIB.

This activity formed part of efforts to strengthen the spiritual development of inmates and to enhance collaboration between correctional institutions and higher education in delivering educational and sustainable religious programs. Previously, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the Yogyakarta Narcotics Correctional Facility signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Development of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi), covering education, research, and community engagement. The Ramadan Pesantren Kilat program at the correctional facility represents one of the concrete follow-up initiatives of this partnership, particularly in implementing community service activities conducted by UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s academic community, including students.

A total of 20 IKS students actively participated in this program in collaboration with CSSMORA UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The participants consisted of 15 CSSMORA members and five former students who had completed their Social Work Field Practice (PPS) at the correctional facility. Their involvement provided direct experiential learning in institutional-based social work practice while contributing meaningfully to strengthening the spiritual development of inmates.

The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 60 inmates of the Yogyakarta Narcotics Correctional Facility who will participate in the Ramadan 1447 H Pesantren Kilat series. Distinguished attendees included the Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Cooperation of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rozaki, M.Si.; the Head of the Social Welfare Study Program, Muhammad Izzul Haq, Ph.D.; the Chairperson of CSSMORA UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Ahmad Rifky; the Acting Head of the Yogyakarta Narcotics Correctional Facility, Bambang Setiawan; and a representative from the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Sleman Regency.

In his remarks, Acting Head of the Correctional Facility Bambang Setiawan emphasized that the Ramadan Pesantren Kilat and routine religious guidance programs serve as important moments for character building and for enhancing the faith of inmates during their period of incarceration. He noted that such programs are expected to strengthen correctional processes that focus not only on legal aspects but also on the moral and spiritual development of inmates.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rozaki, Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Cooperation, delivered motivational remarks encouraging inmates to view their period of correction as a process of character formation and self-improvement. He stated, “Your character is being shaped. The challenge is heavy because you must undergo your sentence in prison. However, God willing, if you sincerely repent and improve yourselves, your paradise will be of higher quality.” This message served as spiritual reinforcement and encouragement for inmates to remain optimistic throughout their rehabilitation process.

The opening ceremony proceeded solemnly and participatively with a sequence of events including the opening by the MC, Qur’anic recitation, remarks from the Acting Head of the Correctional Facility, Qur’anic performances, remarks from the Vice Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, a classical Islamic text recitation by inmates, remarks from the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Sleman Regency represented by Mr. Fauzi, a hadroh performance, a symbolic pinning of santri participant badges by the Vice Rector, a symbolic handover and official opening of the Pesantren Kilat by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and UIN Sunan Kalijaga to the correctional facility, and closing.

Through this initiative, the Social Welfare Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga hopes to further strengthen synergy between the university, student organizations, and correctional institutions in delivering programs that enhance inmates’ spirituality while supporting more humane and sustainable social reintegration processes. The Ramadan Pesantren Kilat serves as a shared learning space that reaffirms the role of higher education institutions in social and humanitarian engagement within society.
