Student with Down Syndrome Demonstrates Outstanding Academic Achievement in an Inclusive Thesis Examination
The Social Welfare Study Program, Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication, held an inclusive undergraduate thesis examination on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. (WIB), at Examination Room FD-1-116. The examination marked an important moment in the practice of higher education that is disability-friendly, equitable, and firmly grounded in respect for human dignity.
The student taking the examination was Fithrunnada Salma Shabrina, an undergraduate student in the Social Welfare Study Program. Salma is a student with an intellectual disability (Down syndrome) who successfully demonstrated strong academic achievement through her thesis defense, entitled “The Role of Parents in Enhancing the Social Well-Being of Children with Down Syndrome at POTADS (Association of Parents of Children with Down Syndrome), Yogyakarta.”
The thesis examination was chaired by Muhammad Izzul Haq, S.Sos., M.Sc., Ph.D., who also served as Salma’s supervisor, with Dr. Asep Jahidin, S.Ag., M.Si. and Ro’fah, M.A., Ph.D. as examiners. The examination panel applied an assessment approach tailored to Salma’s needs, while maintaining the substance and academic standards of the evaluation.
Throughout the examination process, the atmosphere was dialogical, inclusive, and supportive. Salma was able to explain her research methods, theoretical framework, and findings in clear and simple language, reflecting a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the topic under study.
Overall, Salma successfully defended her thesis. This achievement affirms that with appropriate academic support, an inclusive campus environment, and fair evaluation methods, students with disabilities have equal opportunities to reach their fullest potential in higher education.
The implementation of this examination also underscores the commitment of the Faculty of Da‘wah and Communication to advancing inclusive education—one in which diverse abilities are respected and academic success is assessed in a fair, meaningful manner, grounded in humanitarian values.
